New Mosque” or “Atabak Mosque”, known as “New Mosque”, is the largest mosque in Iran and the oldest mosque in Shiraz after Atiq mosque.
The New Mosque of Shiraz was built in 590 AD by Atabak Saad bin Zangi and is located in front of the Shahcheragh holy shirne.
Atabak was able to protect Shiraz from the Mongols’ attack.
He loved poetry and literature and respected poets and mystics that’s why Saadi one of the famous poet who was lived in Atabak’s era, praised this person in the first part of his Golestan book .
the earthquake destroyed this building in the years 690, 1183 and 1296 AH, but it was renovated again that’s why it was named the New Mosque.
This building was first the house of “Atabak Saad bin Zangi”. Due to the recovery of his son after his seriously disease, Atabak devoted his house and order to build a mosque instead of that house.
Two porches were built in the north and south of this building . There are 12 arches on each side of these porticoes.
There is a prayer hall behind the southern portico.
